Shifting from planes to planet-friendly living mea

Shifting from planes to planet-friendly living means choosing sustainability over speed. Because building a climate-conscious community from the ground up requires taking the time to keep our Earth top of mind at every step – carefully deconstructing buildings rather than demolishing them and hauling materials to the landfill.

Goal: Divert 80% of building materials from the landfill. Result: 92% diverted – or 12 buildings disassembled and approx. 27,000 tonnes of concrete, metal, debris and wood either reused or recycled.

Prepping the Blatchford site for development and homebuilding after the last plane flew out in late 2013 meant removing airport hangars and runways. That’s no small task. Sure, it would’ve been faster (and simpler!) to simply demolish the site and haul the materials to the landfill. But that would’ve meant thousands of truckloads of materials sent to the garbage. And Blatchford’s about protecting our planet, not polluting it.

So instead, the buildings were carefully deconstructed – slowly dismantled so that as much material as possible could be reused, sold, or recycled. Some examples? Runway material was both incorporated into the base of the community’s benches and crushed on site for use in future roads.

The naturalized wetlands in Blatchford’s first s

The naturalized wetlands in Blatchford’s first stormwater pond not only prevent flooding and increase biodiversity – they also filter pollutants to improve the quality of stormwater that’s released into the groundwater and river.

The community’s Low Impact Development (LID) approach to stormwater management includes rain gardens, and bioswales. LID mimics nature by allowing water to infiltrate the soil where plants then filter out the pollutants.

The wetlands are engineered to further purify the water when it reaches the stormwater ponds. The result? A better quality of stormwater is discharged into the environment.

Most of Blatchford’s rainwater and snow runoff will drain into one of the two planned stormwater ponds – and they’re designed to handle this extra water. As water levels rise, the pond’s outlet slowly drains the excess water into downstream storm sewer lines and into the North Saskatchewan River.

On a day that reached nearly -40C outside, Blatchford resident Pablo shares how – inside his energy efficient home – Blatchford Renewable Energy (BRE)’s been keeping him and his family warm each winter since moving in a few years ago.

2024 marks BRE’s 5th year of operating in Blatchford. In honour of this milestone, here are 5 quick facts you might not know about the system that’s heating and cooling this community’s buildings.

1. BRE operates a District Energy Sharing System (DESS) – a centralized system where thermal energy is distributed from a central location to multiple buildings in a neighbourhood.

2. Homeowners don’t need a gas furnace or air conditioner – that’s because the system heats AND cools Blatchford’s homes. Bonus: it also heats the water.

3. It’s a modular and flexible system – it’s being constructed in stages to match the pace of development in the neighbourhood and is able to incorporate the latest innovations in renewable energy.

4. This first stage of the system uses a geoexchange field – the field harnesses shallow geothermal energy through 570 boreholes (each 150 metres deep) located beneath the community’s stormwater pond.

5. BRE is award-winning! In 2023, the system won two international awards from the Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) – Blatchford itself won two Best New Community awards, one from @chbanational and one from @chba_edmontonregion

Aviation history is everywhere in Blatchford. The neighbourhood is built on the former Edmonton Municipal Airport grounds – once Canada’s first licensed airfield – and named after former Edmonton Mayor Kenneth Blatchford who, in 1927, convinced the city to establish an “air harbour”.

Take a walk through this growing community. You’ll discover its street names, pedestrian-only paths, family-friendly parks and other features reflect #yeg’s legacy of aviation innovators and barrier-breakers.

Did you know? National Aviation Day is recognized every Feb. 23 – the day in 1909 when J.A.D. McCurdy piloted Canada’s first flight.

1. Entrance feature – “Arrival Gate”. Created as a pedestrian gateway to the community rather than an entrance designed for vehicles, its design incorporates structural supports as a nod to the struts used in biplanes (an early type of aircraft).
2. Littlewood Park. Named after pilot Margaret Littlewood, who flew and taught flying out of Edmonton’s Blatchford Field. Her impact on aviation includes training WWII pilots and bush pilots who helped explore the north, as well as airline crews.
3. Former airport control tower. Plans are underway to renovate this distinctive landmark into a welcoming community space.
4. Recycled/reused runway. Runway materials were crushed on site to be used for future roads. Some of the larger materials were repurposed in the base of Blatchford’s benches.
5. 12-30 Runway. One of the airport’s two main runways,12-30 was named for how it aligned with magnetic north (‘12-30’ is shorthand for the compass point as an aircraft approaches an airfield – 120 degrees from the northwest, 300 from the southeast). Shifts in the Earth’s magnetic field cause magnetic north to change. A centrepiece shows how a compass would’ve aligned with magnetic north in 1942 when the runway was built. It also shows magnetic north in 2013, when the site was closed.
6. Alpha Boulevard. Aircraft used Taxiway Alpha to access runways, terminals and hangars. Today its namesake features fully separated multi-use paths lined with trees on both sides.
7. Takeoff. This art piece celebrates the vision needed for humans to achieve flight.

DYK that CIMCO stands for Canadian Ice Machine Company? That’s just one of the things our team learned when touring their Edmonton manufacturing centre.⁣

CIMCO manufactured the heat pump in Blatchford's first energy centre, which is actually the largest heat pump in Alberta (another fun fact). This centralized heat pump is integral to the community’s first phase of the District Energy Sharing System (DESS) which utilizes thermal energy to provide environmentally friendly heating, cooling and hot water services to the homes and buildings in the community. ⁣

During our CIMCO visit, we got a sneak peek of the next heat pump that’s going to be installed in our energy centre in the coming weeks. Adding a second heat pump was always part of the plan because as Blatchford grows, so will the infrastructure and amount of equipment needed to operate the DESS.⁣

Blatchford is one of only 30 projects worldwide that met the criteria for an Award of Merit by the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC).🏅

FIDIC is the global representative body for national associations of consulting engineers and represents over one million engineering professionals and 40,000 firms in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Congratulations to our partners @associatedengineering for winning this award for the work they did designing this system. District energy plays a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the community by providing shared renewable heating, cooling and hot water to the homes.
